Neighborhood Name Riverside, Avondale, Murray Hill, San Marco, Springfield
City Jacksonville
State FL
Comments All of the neighborhoods listed above are Jacksonville’s most gay friendly areas with Riverside defiantly being number one! Most of the clubs and bars are located in Riverside as well as the gay community center. Also, the gay pride parade takes place in Riverside. This area has a unique “downtown” area called 5 Points (at Park and Margaret streets) that has many quaint shops and restaurants. It has a very gay, bohemian, new age, and hippy feel to it. This is a historical area with lovely older homes and apartment buildings. There is a lot of construction going on with new condos and shops. There is also a grand old park on the beautiful Saint Johns River (Memorial Park) and a nice park with a lake next to 5 Points (Riverside Park). The city has plans to extend the boardwalk from downtown Jacksonville to Memorial Park. It will be several miles when completed. The closer you are to the river, the nicer and more expensive it is. The closer you get to I-10, it generally gets cheaper, but sections can be more “seedy”. This is slowly changing. There is also a smaller shopping district that is being restored at Park and King streets. This area has a few nice restaurants. Overall, Riverside is great community to live in!!! Avondale is the area where gays who have more money reside. This area is just south of Riverside. It is a very upscale area of Jacksonville. It also has a small unique “downtown” area along beautiful tree lined Saint Johns Avenue. There is also a beautiful, large park called Boone Park at the south end of the shops. In Avondale, there are many older, large, very expensive homes and also some affordable apartment buildings west of Saint Johns Avenue. I would say that this is Jacksonville’s second gayest neighborhood. Next is Murray Hill. This area is located southwest of Riverside and Avondale off Roosevelt Blvd. It consist of older wooden and brick bungalow homes that are still very reasonable in price. There are a lot of “fixer uppers.” There is one bar at the north end of the neighborhood. This area is a very short drive from Riverside, Avondale and downtown Jacksonville. There is a tiny cluster of shops and mostly restaurants on Edgewood Avenue near Roosevelt Blvd. There are a few smaller parks. This area is bounded by Roosevelt Blvd and Cassat Avenue. Next on the list is lovely San Marco. This wonderful area is located on the east side of the Saint Johns River across from Riverside. It was a planned development that sprang up in the 1920's. Many gays live in the area although it’s not as gay as Riverside and Avondale. It is very upscale and very expensive. Some describe it as begin very snooty. San Marco Square (on San Marco Blvd @ Atlantic Blvd) has a large number fine shops, day spas, salons and some gay friendly restaurants. Expect to pay big bucks for even a smaller home or condo here. There are still some affordable apartments north of San Marco Blvd. There are many new condos being built in this area including the renovation of a grand old school that was converted into lofts not long ago. All of Hendricks Ave. (North of Atlantic Blvd) is being renovated and with the building of a supermarket, condos, and restaurants, this section should be thriving soon. This is where the gay sauna is located. If you like high rise living, you can also take a look at the South Bank district (some people still refer to it as San Marco). Though it is not known as a “gay area”, it’s a stones throw away from all of the neighborhoods I listed. This is just north of San Marco and is directly across the river from downtown Jacksonville. This area has several hotels, upscale restaurants and several high rise condo projects going on. The boardwalk along the river is quiet and you get great views of downtown Jacksonville and the waterfront with it’s beautiful bridges. Finally there is Springfield. This neighborhood is located directly north of downtown Jacksonville along Main Street. It was Jacksonville’s first suburb and is full of decaying brick storefronts and wooden Victorian homes. There are big plans for this area, but change seems to be slow. There are a small hand full of upscale restaurants and a dinner theater that is pretty gay. Certain streets have many restored homes and others may have none or one here and there. There are plans to build shops and condos along 8th Street near Main. There seems to be a fair amount of gays in the area fixing up these older homes, but again change seems to be slow. I have heard it is pretty safe, but many parts have a very dangerous and seedy feel to it. The area is bounded by some really rough areas of Jacksonville. With all the cute older, abandoned store fronts, old time gas stations and charming (but run down) homes, this area has a lot of potential to be a great “gay ghetto”!
